In March 2017, The Province of PEI released a Provincial Energy Strategy with recommendations to guide our energy future.  The goals are to drive local economic opportunities,  lower greenhouse gas emissions and be cost effective.  See The Strategy for more information.

Our Mandate

In Prince Edward Island, the PEI Energy Corporation is responsible “to develop and promote the development of energy systems and the generation, production, transmission and distribution of energy in all its forms on an economic and efficient basis, to provide financial assistance for the development, installation and use of energy systems, and to coordinate all government programs in the establishment and application of energy systems in the province.”

What We Do

Consistent with our legislated objectives, the Corporation:

• owns and operates wind farm operations at Elmira (30 Megawatts), Hermanville/Clearspring (30 Megawatts) and North Cape (13.56 Megawatts);
• owns electrical transmission facilities in Prince County that connects its North Cape operations and other renewable energy generators to the Maritime Electric grid;
• finances energy projects and energy systems, particularly those initiatives that involve renewable development in PEI (i.e., Wind Energy Institute of Canada Renewable Energy Park); 
• implements the elements of the PEI Energy Accord and the recommendations of the PEI Energy Commission;
• seeks greater energy reliability by pursuing increased electrical intertie capacity between the PEI grid and the mainland;
• provides guidance to Government for the formulation of provincial policy, programs, legislation and agreements that pertain to energy matters.

Our History

The Province of Prince Edward Island has developed a North American, if not global, reputation in the development of renewable energy. PEI has always been viewed as an innovator in developing, demonstrating and deploying renewable energy systems with due regard for the environment. PEI has a strong reputation as a leader in the development of its wind resources with the highest per capita penetration of this renewable energy in its provincial electricity portfolio. PEI has been a leader in the use of biomass resources converting waste into thermal energy to heat municipal buildings.

Despite these and other accomplishments, the Province does, however, continue to rely heavily on off-island sources of imported fossil fuel-based energy.  Rising energy costs are having a negative impact on all Islanders, businesses and institutions and new measures must be put in place now to secure the Island’s future prosperity.

The Government of Prince Edward Island is, in parallel with this new energy strategy, developing a new climate change strategy that will help serve to protect the Island’s environment and lead to a more sustainable and economically robust future.
